TREKKING |
Nestled at a height
of 2134 meters, commanding a panoramic view of the grandest known
snowy mountains in the world, Dorje-ling “The Land Of Thunderbold”,
has aptly been called the queen of the hills. |
| A colorful town with a
healthy atmosphere, Darjeeling originated from Dorje-ling as
a health resort for the Britishers after Captain Llyod and J.W.
Grant visited the area in 1828. Following the visit, development
was rapid and by 1840, a new settlement was carved out and on
the 4th of July 1881, the famous Toy Train, constructed
under the Eastern Bengal Railway agent, Mr. Franklin Prestage,
announced it’s arrival to Darjeeling. |
|
|
The road
to Darjeeling is surely an engineering feat, it zizags its way up
and one climbs about 2000 meters on the drive. As one drives up
thru sub-tropical forests one cannot help but gaze with amazement
thinking at the back of his mind about how true Dr. Hooker was when
he said “ It is difficult to conceive a grander mass of vegitation”. |
 |
Though
only about 14% of the population is Buddhist, there are a large
number of Buddhist Monasteries belonging to different sects.
Important ones are Yiga Choling at Ghoom, built in 1840 by a
Mongolian Monk belongs to the Gelug-Pa sect of Tibetan Buddhism,
The Bhutia Busti and the Aloobari monasteries are famous for
their rare thankas and beautiful statues. |
| The
Dali Monastery, the home of the Drukchen Rimpoche, has been
newly built and belongs to the Drukpa Kargyu sect. The Japanese
Peace Pagoda stands on top of Charli Mont overlooking a Japanese
Temple of Nipponjan Myohoji Buddhist order, making the whole
area very tranquil. A visit to these monasteries can certainly
broaden one’s knowledge and understanding of Buddhism. |
|
|
Apart
from the monasteries and temples Darjeeling do have much to offer,
Padmaja Naidu Himayan Zoological Park, Snow Leopard Breeding Centre,
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Llyod Botanical Garden, The
Natural History Museum and the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center,
which actually started in 1959 produces beautiful hadicrafts and
carpets. It is indeed another interesting place where one can walk
leisurely thru its many workshops watching beautiful handicrafts
being made in Old Tibetan Tradition. |
|
Above
all, an early morning excursion to Tiger Hill, situated 11 km away
at an altitude of 2590 m is an experience by itself. The view of
the sunrise from here is unparalled and breathtaking. The Himalayas
face the rising sun and as the fireball rises, a range of colorful
rays dance on the snows bringing the cold, majestic peaks to life
and another beautiful day for us – the spectacular beauty
of nature has to be seen and felt…to be believed !!! |
